International Training Institute (ITI) started as small computer training institution and has now grown into one of the biggest private training institutions in the country and recognized by Department of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (DHERST). Recently it celebrated it’s 10 years of being recognized by DHERST.
How International Training Institute (ITI) was founded.
It International Training Institute was established in March 1999 by co–founders Professor Late Sentheyval and his son Mr. Senthil Kumaran. Late Professor Sentheyval was a Sri Lankan national who was teaching at the University of Papua New Guinea. At the time, Computers were running on Windows 95/98 operating system and most of the officer workers, mainly secretarial/administration staff need to transit from using Manual Typewriters to computers.
Professor and his son started a training institute to train office works and general public who were interested to study computing skills and basic business courses. They setup shop at Ori Lavi Building, Tabari Place, Boroko, in the National Capital District. Although the rent for training rooms and office space was expensive, founders had the vision and provided the convenient location for students and working class people to easily access the institution.
Soon, the courses became popular and course enrollment numbers increased. The institution offered both day and night classes. Classes were convenient for working class people to come for training after work and attend classes from 5-7 pm each day. For those who wanted to enroll for night classes, the institution provided bus drop-offs at additional fees.
Campus related to Badili Campus-Current Location in 2004
After 5 years of operation, the founders saw the need for expansion, they relocated to it’s main Port Moresby Campus, Badili in the National Capital District in 2004. At that time, Badili area was not developed as it is today and there were concerns of student safety, Public PMV transport access but it proved to be a strategic move.
From their the expanded to normal training classes and added Corporate Staff Training packages for clients. As part their corporate social responsibility activities, they started sponsoring local Cricket Teams along the Motuan Villages and communities around Badili, Town and Konedobu areas.

Many of the corporate organizations wanted to upskill their employees but they cannot release their staff from work. So, once ITI started offering night-classes, many of the organizations started sponsoring their staff for further training at ITI to acquire their Certificates and Diplomas. This was one of the many power training needs in the city that ITI was able to cater for the need.
ITI’s corporate slogan was “Affordable and Quality Education”.

From it’s humble beginning at Tabari’s Place Boroko to Badili, International Training Institute (ITI) has campuses in the following centers;
- ITI Port Moresby Campus
- ITI LAE Campus
- ITI Kokopo Campus
- ITI Alotau Campus
- ITI Kimbe Campus
- ITI Kiunga Campus
Over the past years, ITI has partnered with Provincial Governments and started campuses in Buka, (AROB), Kavieng (New Ireland), Mt. Hagen (WHP) but those centers have been closed.
Recognition by DHERST
International Training Institute (ITI) is now one of the DHERST Registered Private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Recently, it celebrated 10 years of recognition by DHERST. ITI now has plans to get a university status in the near future.
Grade 12 students are now selected through the DHERST National Online Selection System (NOS).
ITI’S contribution towards PNG Development
ITI’s contribution towards the development of human resource in PNG is huge. It not only provides alternative higher education programs for School Leavers but also up skilling of workers who are currently employed in both the private and public sectors by way of offering night classes and corporate training programs.
The ITI Alumni network is growing as more and more people enroll in the institution it will continue to grow.
Traditional notion of viewing higher training institutions as government services only is slowly changing in PNG. Thanks to institutions like the International Training Institute (ITI).
