Port Moresby Nature Park is a both a recreational and educational nature park located right in the city of Port Moresby. Established in the land between two national institutions, the University of Papua New Guinea and the Port Moresby National High School, the park host a variety of native animal and bird species, plants and trees. As such, the park provides much needed green space for local city residents and visitors alike to enjoy a little bit of nature in otherwise, a dry and hot climate in the city.
Although, the park is small but it does offer a lot of services to the city residents for their recreational and social activities in a natural and peaceful setting.
Access to Port Moresby Nature Park.
Access to the Port Moresby Nature Park is through two entrance gates. The main entrance gate is through Goro Kaeaga Road, by pass UPNG and before reaching Port Moresby National High School gate, look for big sign post on both sides of the gate as shown in image below. It has a decent visitors parking lot, the main entrance gate to the park, the ticket office, a nice Café, gift shop and Administration office.
Regular visitors can sign up for Access Membership or pay upfront at the ticket office. For larger group and tourist tours can book in advance with the park before visiting it or using their facilities. Individuals can visit the park from Monday to Sunday 9:00-4:30 pm.
The second access gate is through the University of Papua New Guinea Waigani Campus. Since, Port Moresby Nature Park located next to the University, the park as a second entrance gate. Those who want to use this gate will drive into the University of Papua New Guinea entrance from Goro Kaeaga Road, and then go to the UPNG Physical Facilities Management (PFM) area. Right behind the PMF office and workshop area is a nice paved road and car park.
It has parking spots for few vehicles under big trees, Park’s Canteen, and an open bench area for lunch. Access tickets can be purchased at the canteen .
Recreational facilities at Port Moresby Nature Park.
Although, the park hosts animals, it offers the following facilities as well;
- Picnic areas with barbeque plates and shelters
- Wedding area
- Kids playground
- Café in the front entrance and canteen at the back entrance
Security at Port Moresby Nature Park
Security at the park is provided by G4S Security, the British multinational private security, which has operations in Papua New Guinea. They have a long partnership arrangement with the park. So, G4S security personnel are stationed at the gates, do foot patrol inside and provide security the whole facility.
